A Touareg Takouba from North Africa

A Touareg Takouba from North Africa

An African Touareg takouba sword from North Africa.

The narrower blade and flatter pommel lead me to believe that this example is more likely from the Saharan area, as opposed to say, the Hausa or Fulani to the south.

The blade is in good condition overall with only a few spots of dark old  rust towards the tip. The crossguard has been stuffed with some kind of fibre and is missing its leather covering. There is some slight movement in the crossguard, but the hilt is firm otherwise. The leather grip wrap is intact and still tight.

There is some nice detailed decoration on the leather scabbard. The scabbard is missing its tip and suspension straps, and has a worm hole in one side (visible in the photos), but is otherwise in good condition.

This example is probably early 20th century.

Blade length: 79 cm

Overall length: 93 cm
