Ethiopian shotel sword

An Oromo shotel

A short shotel sword of a somewhat rare type popularly associated with the Oromo people of Ethiopia. The forward-curving blade is double edged, and has a diamond-shape cross-section for most of its length before transitioning to a flattened diamond towards the base. It has a nice deep patina and no signs of active rust or pitting, but does have some nicks and dents along the edge.

The I-shaped handle is made of a hard wood. A previous owner appears to have sanded it down in some areas, but it does retain its original patina in places.  It has had one corner broken off (which is a common injury to hilts of this type) and has a deep crack running down one side. This crack was probably caused when the blade was originally hammered into the handle and has widened over time. The tang is peened over the base of the handle. The entire assembly is solid, although the blade does show a slight bit of movement.

Blade length: 46 cm

Overall length: 57 cm
