Jile Gile dagger

A small Gile from the Horn of Africa

A small Jile (or "Gile") dagger. These daggers are generally associated with the Afar and Somali peoples from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia.

This example has a broad, double-edged, but asymmetrical  blade typical of these types of daggers. The blade is very secure in the I-shaped wooden hilt. The hilt has a nice deep patina, but also appears to have been rather sloppily varnished at some point. The blade fits very snugly into the rawhide sheath. The sheath has been repaired at the edges with copper wire and decorated with aluminium wire at the top. I would date this example to roughly the 1930s or 1940s.
