A silver-mounted Pedang Lurus from Java

More correctly known as a "pedang suduk", these short swords from the island of Java are generally seen as originating during the Dutch colonial period in the 17th and 18th centuries, with the overall form of the weapon being inspired by European hangers and hunting swords, while the blade and decoration reflect local designs and traditions.

This example has some of the most beautiful and intricate repoussé silver decoration I've yet seen  on these swords. There are some old small dents along the spine of the scabbard and a shallow one at the edge of the blank panel on the left side. The straight, single-edged pamor blade shows some old patches of corrosion. It has also clearly been acid-washed many times, as tends to be the case with antique weapons from Java. Otherwise, it is in sound condition and sits firmly in the handle, although there is a little bit of movement in the cross guard.

Blade length: 48.5 cm

Overall length: 62 cm

Length in scabbard: 65 cm

18th - 19th century
