A Silver-mounted Pesh kabz from Kutch
A beautiful pesh kabz dagger from Kutch in India.
Metalwork from Kutch is characterised by intricate foliate designs embossed against a finely stippled background. More particularly, daggers from the region have a distinctive style of scabbard with the metalwork around the mouth of the scabbard resembling the capital of an Indo-Islamic column, while the scabbard finial is shaped as a long-billed waterbird.
Daggers of this type are usually mounted in gilt copper. This example is somewhat unusual in having a silver hilt and scabbard fittings. The silverwork is in excellent condition with only the small loop on the pommel having been broken off at some point in the past. The blade is wootz and is in near pristine condition, with no pitting or discolouration.
