A Revolutionary War era Officer's hanger
Short swords or hangers of this type were carried by officers in the late 18th century both on land and sea, and are particularly associated with the American War of Independence. This example is almost identical to a sword described as an "Officers' short saber of the Revolution" in "The American sword: 1775-1945" by Harold Leslie Peterson (2003: 62). Peterson especially noted the horn grip wrapped with a flat strip of copper, as well as the blade characterised by two fullers and a false edge.
The blade is in great condition for its age with nice, crisp fullers, and only minor pitting and a few small nicks along the edge. There is some very slight movement in the hilt, probably due to the horn shrinking with age. The spiraled horn grip is wrapped with a thin strip of copper and has a small crack at the back (visible in the photographs). The brass guard shows traces of gilding in the corners.
Blade length: 66 cm
Overall length: 83 cm
