A vintage Scottish dirk - SOLD
A vintage dirk made in Scotland.
The very substantial blade narrows to a needle point with deep jimping along the spine and a false edge. It appears to be carbon steel, and has possibly been sharpened in the past.
The hilt is made of ebonised oak carved in a Celtic knotwork pattern with an amber glass imitation Cairngorm stone in the pommel. The glass is free from chips or scratches and appears to have been glued back into place at some point. This re-gluing has partly obscured the Scottish flag underneath the stone which reads "Alba"
The mountings are silver-plated and in places this plating has worn off. The collar is marked "H Scotland" on the the back. The leather covering the scabbard is in great condition and otherwise all the elements are secure and the dirk still fits snugly into the sheath.
Overall, it has a very business-like feel to it, despite the rather ostentious pommel decoration, and the quality of the materials and the fact that it was made in Scotland leads me to believe that it is of earlier, rather than later, 20th century origin.
